K-pop girl group wraps up Australian concert tour

K-pop superstar BlackPink finished its Australian tour by playing in Melbourne on June 13 and in Sydney two days later in front of screaming fans.

The two performances were part of the girl group’s “In Your Area” world tour. BlackPink plans to wrap up the tour with Bangkok concerts midway through next month.

In particular, Rose was emotional about the Australian concerts because she was raised in Melbourne. The 22-year-old performed a cover of Skylar Grey’s Coming Home to commemorate her return to the city.

BlackPink is a multinational four-piece girl band, which is currently one of the biggest K-pop acts. Its popularity is comparable to that of K-pop colossus BTS, a seven-member boy band.

BlackPink, which was formed in 2016 by YG Entertainment, presently has the world’s most-subscribed girl group channel on YouTube.

The quartet amassed billions of views on the video-sharing platform with its latest album “Kill This Love,” which was released earlier this year to reach No. 24 on Billboard 200. And more than 80 million follows the idol group’s Instagram account.

All the exploits are impressive because its management agency, YG Entertainment, faces an existential crisis.

Its founder Yang Hyun-suk announced late last week that he had resigned from all posts he holds at the Seoul-based company, which he established in 1996.

Yang’s decision came as fresh allegations over YG continued to grow. Suspicions surfaced that the embattled label colluded with the police to cover up a possible drug use involving an YG artist.

Yang said that future investigations will let us know whether or not the media reports and rumors are true.
