Global K-pop map unveiled

Fandom lab Blip recently came up with a global K-pop map to show which Korean bands are most popular. As widely expected, BTS has the biggest fan base, followed by BlackPink and TWICE.

Along with the top three, Momoland and EXO combined to carve out more than half of all the K-pop-associated searches.

Blip, which was launched of late in Seoul, analyzed YouTube data on 76 K-pop teams from July 2018 to June 2019 to learn there were over 26.55 million searches on them.

Just 10.1 percent came from Korea chased by Thailand with 8.1 percent and Vietnam with 7.4 percent.

More surprisingly, the city that loves K-pop the most is not the country’s capital Seoul but Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam.

By continent, BTS stood out in the United States and Europe as the seven-member boy band explained a fifth of K-pop-related searches.

The septet, otherwise known as the Bangtan Boys, released its fourth studio album “Map of the Soul: Persona” this April to rock the globe.

They went through a globe-trotting concert tour to fascinate fans in such cities as Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Sao Paulo, London, and Paris.

The Seoul-based idol group is now taking a long break for the first time since its 2013 debut and is scheduled to come back in time with its performance in Saudi Arabia in October.

When it comes to Asia, however, two girl groups of BlackPink and TWICE dominate the scene.

In fact, BlackPink has more than twice as many searches as BTS in such countries as Thailand and Japan. In comparison, TWICE rules in Japan.
