Automaker develops air purification system

The era of convergence dawns as the boundaries between different industries continue to blur as a South Korean company dubbed Hyundai Motor amply demonstrates.

The Seoul-based automaker announced May 16 that it developed an intelligent air purification system, which monitors interior air quality to automatically filter the air inside a car.

Korea’s largest carmaker said that the technology can remove fine particulates before passengers enter the automobile, and purification of can air throughout a journey.

The company noted that the innovation builds on its prior work to enhance in-car air quality by introducing a new automated monitoring system, which continually checks interior air quality until it achieves an “excellent status.”

“Conventional air purification systems only operate for a set period when activated, turning off after a designated time regardless of current cabin air quality,” a Hyundai official said.

“But the new system constantly monitors the car’s air quality, activating the purification function if the air quality decreases to ‘fair’ level. It then maintains the cleaning process until the air quality improves to an ‘excellent’ level.”

He explained that even if the exterior air quality is at “poor” level, its new system can purify the air inside to “excellent” level in a short time.

Hyundai senior official Shin Yong-suk, who leads the engineering design team, said that the company is also working on other projects that have not been considered by automakers.

“Enabling our customers to breathe the cleanest air, even in highly-polluted areas, is a demonstration of how Hyundai Motor strives to care for its customers,” he said.

“This innovation is just one of many projects we are working on to provide our customers with the best in-car environments.”
