1Gbps speed achieved over 5G network

Korea pulls out all the stops to become the world’s first country to start the much-hyped fifth-generation (5G) mobile telephony services beginning on April 5.

KT, Korea’s second-largest wireless carrier, and Samsung Electronics, the world’s top manufacturer of smartphones, announced March 27 that they have achieved the 1Gbps speed over the commercial 5G network in Seoul.

“The two companies have focused on providing end users with real-world outdoor mobile experiences, achieving overall 1Gbps speed on 5G smartphone connected to 5G commercial network,” KT and Samsung said in a joint statement.

“This has been one of the key accomplishments for the two companies – proving that 5G commercial network is ready to deliver stable gitabit speed for end-users.”

The two Seoul-based companies were sure that they are ready to start the 5G services next week.

“KT has shown unparalleled leadership in technology through its 5G trial services in PyeongChang, which led to early 5G commercialization,” KT Executive Vice President Seo Chang-seok said.

“Based on our technical expertise and years of experience working on 5G, KT will continue to establish its 5G network across the nation to provide differentiated services to our valued customers in collaboration with Samsung.”

Samsung’s R&D chief Jeon Jae-ho said that the achievement is a part of an ongoing collaboration between the two outfits over the past several years.

“Samsung and KT will continue to work closely in collaboration to push beyond the limits of today’s technology and offer a glimpse of the revolutionary world led by 5G,” Jeon said.

“Harnessing our assets and cutting-edge 5G end-to-end solutions, Samsung aims to be at the forefront to push the limits of 5G even further.”

Korea originally planned to launch the commercial 5G services in March but the government delayed it to April citing a lack of preparations. As the United States is ready to embark on its 5G services next month, Korea decided to start it as early as possible on April 5 ahead of the U.S.
