Korean tech giant continues to diversify customers

Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest memory chip maker, will provide its advanced high-performance processor to German automobile manufacturer Audi.

The Seoul-based company said May 30 that its Exynos Auto 8890 processor will power Audi’s third-generation high-spec modular infotainment platform (MIB).

The MIB refers to Audi’s technology, which anticipates the drivers’ needs through keeping up with the latest advancements in information and entertainment equipment of its premium models.

The latest generation of the MIB, which is adopted by the networked A4, will incorporate Samsung’s Exynos Auto 8890, a powerful processor with octa-core CPU and 12-core GPU.

The cooperation is expected to boost Samsung’s efforts to diversify its business portfolio in the semiconductor business.

Samsung has been a runaway leader in memory chips but the outfit has tried to reduce its dependence on the highly-volatile business by generating new revenue sources.

Audi pinned high hopes on the partnership with Samsung.

“To Audi, mobility isn’t just about getting to the destination, it’s about getting there safely and delightfully,” Audi senior executive Alfons Pfaller said.

“We have worked closely with Samsung over the past few years to provide our customers with an in-vehicle infotainment system that includes the newly upgraded Multi Media Interface that responds instantly and accurately to the user’s controls for a premium driving experience.”

Samsung Vice President Kenny Han said that the collaboration will lead to new possibilities.

“With a premium automobile brand like Audi, the driving experience is expected to be not only high performing and safe but also exhilarating,” he said.

“Through close collaboration with Audi, we are excited that Samsung’s Exynos Auto 8890 will be powering their new in-vehicle infotainment system that will open new possibilities for smarter and more enjoyable driving experiences.”
