Samsung to sponsor much-touted documentary

In 1969, people gathered around to watch the Apollo 11 moon landing on TVs manufactured by such companies as RCA, Zenith, and Admiral based in the United States.

Back then, Samsung Electronics that is the world’s largest TV maker now has yet to roll out televisions as its first TV production started the next year.

In half a century, the Seoul-based tech giant strives to make people watch much-touted documentaries celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing on its TV products.

On May 23, Samsung announced the “Making History” QLED 8K TV commercial and a multi-platform campaign with CNN Films in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

“TV technology has been essential in bringing the world together to experience critical moments in modern history,” Samsung Vice President Grace Dolan said.

“As we mark the 50th anniversary of Samsung Electronics and the first steps on the moon by a human, it’s only fitting that our ‘Making History’ QLED 8K TV commercial and multimedia campaign with CNN celebrates the past while giving a glimpse into how Samsung will continue to bring people together in the future through the power of 8K.”

The campaign features moon landing footage licensed from the “APOLLO 11” documentary.

Samsung also plans to sponsor the broadcast premiere of the documentary on CNN, which will come next year along with a one-minute “Making History” commercial of Samsung.

Todd Douglas Miller directed and produced the documentary, which was created from newly-discovered 70mm archival footage and 11,000 hours of uncatalogued audio recordings.

“Our cross-platform campaign with CNN aligns the new era of 8K QLED picture quality together with the technical feat of the film’s extraordinary production,” a Samsung official said.

“We will also sponsor a three-part digital video series tied to the anniversary.”
