Samsung joins hands with Red Hat

South Korea’s Samsung Electronics announced on May 25 that it had joined hands with Red Hat to collaborate in the field of next-generation memory software.

Samsung Electronics is the world’s largest manufacturer of memory chips, smartphones, and flat-panel displays. Red Hat is the world’s top provider of open-source solutions.

Samsung said that the two-way partnership would focus on the development and validation of open-source software for existing and emerging memory and storage products.

Included in them are NVMe SSDs, CXL memory, computational memory/storage, and fabrics, which are geared toward building an expansive ecosystem for closely integrated memory hardware and software.

Over the past years, memory designs have faced fast changes because of the growth of data driven by artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and the metaverse.

“Samsung and Red Hat will make a concerted effort to define and standardize memory software solutions that embrace evolving server and memory hardware, while building a more robust memory ecosystem,” Samsung Executive Vice President Bae Yong-cheol said.

“We will invite partners from across the IT industry to join us in expanding the software-hardware memory ecosystem to create greater customer value.”

Red Hat Senior Vice President Marjet Andriesse also welcomed the bilateral cooperation.

“In the upcoming data-centric era, the integration of memory-centric hardware and software architectures will become increasingly essential, and for this purpose, Red Hat is happy to participate in the joint undertaking with Samsung,” said Andriesse, who leads Red Hat Asia Pacific.

Under the partnership, Samsung plans to launch the Samsung Memory Research Cloud, where the two corporations will develop and verify software solutions on various server environments.

The Seoul-based company said that the new outfit would enable customers and partners to evaluate new software products in configuring optimal combinations with memory hardware.
