Seoul to host SICAF 2019 at COEX July 17-21

The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to host three international gatherings midway through next month including Asia’s biggest animation event.

The city held a press conference on June 17 to announce that the Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival (SICAF) will take place July 17-21 at COEX in southern Seoul.

The 23rd edition of the annual event, which started in 1995, is one of the world’s five most prestigious animal festivals.

“A total of 2,565 films from 93 countries were submitted to the festival, and only 103 films from 28 countries with diversity and quality will be shown to the audiences,” a Seoul official said.

“A cartoon and animation exhibition will also be organized alongside the screening program. The exhibition has three parts, that is special, featured, and invitation section and includes a variety of fun contents such as interviews with webtoon artists, costume lay performances, and booths of related companies.”

The official said that the opening film is the much-tooted Korean 3D animation “Red Shoes,” where a figure named Red Shoes becomes a totally different person.

The other two meetings are the Seoul Promotion Plan and the Seoul International Imagination Industry.

The former, which will be held July 16-17 at Millennium Seoul Hilton, is the top market for animation and webtoon professionals. Major global buyers including Netflix, Disney, Nickelodeon, Youku will be present.

The latter, which will take place July 19-20 at Dongdaemun Design Plaza, is the largest meeting place for cartoon, webtoon, and animation designed to showcase the present and future of the content industry.

“The three events will present a snapshot of changes and trends happening right now in international imagination industry,” Seoul Director General Cho In-dong said.

“The festivals will increase international awareness of the Korean cartoon and animation industry. We are committed to supporting it to be a successful event loved by everyone.”
