BAT's Sacheon factory passes final assessment for the prestigious certificate

BAT Sacheon Factory has been officially certified for the International Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS), according to the company on April 7.

The outfit, located some 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, said that it had passed the final AWS assessment through rigorous on-site water recourse management and consultation with stakeholders.

AWS is a global membership collaboration comprising businesses, NGOs, and the public sector and operates with the common goal to promote the responsible use of water resources.

During the process of acquiring the AWS certification, there is a comprehensive verification of water-related facilities, water quality hygiene management, water conservation as well as the impact to the hydro-ecosystem in the basin.

BAT said that it had recycled 18,000 tons of wastewater a year, which is equivalent to the water required to fill seven Olympics-sized swimming pools.

The firm has carried out the monthly inspection of its wastewater treatment and the industrial complex management authority’s check-up to seek a win-win solution with the local community.

It is a part of the entity’s enterprise-wide ESG campaign, dubbed “CO2 Diet,” geared toward encouraging the employees to adopt a habit of natural resource conservation.

Short for Environmental, Social, and corporate Governance, ESG refers to three central factors in improving the sustainability of a company or business.

A mounting number of corporations are adopting ESG as their goal locally and globally.

“BAT Sacheon Factory has set a strict mid-to-long-term goal to reduce carbon emission and manage water resource continuously investing in equipment and facilities,” a BAT spokesman said.

“By acquiring the AWS certification which testifies to the implementation of the responsible environmental practices, it aims to accelerate environmentally responsible operation and contribute to A Better Tomorrow.”
