BAT Sacheon Factory checks viability of renewable energy

BAT Korea Manufacturing announced on April 28 that the company had started operating a pair of photovoltaic dish solar thermal systems in Sacheon, some 300 kilometers south of Seoul.

BAT is the first to operate the solar thermal collection system in Korea using a domestic company’s renewable technology.

The system has a diameter of 3 meters to create steam using efficient solar thermal collection panels. BAT expected that it would replace existing gas boilers in the factory, thus contributing to reducing carbon emissions.

The demonstration project, which will be carried out for half a year, represents the industry-academia cooperation’s first outcome in ESG innovation, according to BAT.

Toward that end, BAT signed the ESG cooperation MOU with Gyeongsang National University early this year and has conducted research on renewable energy.

Brief for Environmental, Social, and corporate Governance, ESG is three central factors in improving the sustainability of a company or business.

Currently, a growing number of firms and organizations are adopting ESG as their goal across the world.

“BAT Sacheon Factory has been expanding its environmentally responsible business practice through the test of an on-site photovoltaic generation facility and implementation of the International Alliance of Water Stewardship (AWS),” BAT Sacheon Factory chief Kim Ji-hyeong said.

“We will carry out the local technology-based demonstration project through the industry-academia cooperation with the local university and continue implementing the factory’s carbon emission reduction goal.”

AWS refers to a global membership collaboration comprising businesses, non-governmental organizations, and the public sector and operates with the common goal of promoting the responsible use of water resources.
