BTS wins two awards at BBMA

K-pop megastar BTS had another major night on May 1 as the seven-member band picked up two awards at this year’s Billboard Music Awards (BBMA) where rap star Drake garnered the top honor.

The boy group snagged the Top Social Artist for three straight years based on its loyal fan base. Because it is a fan-voted category, BTS was widely expected to win.

And this year, the K-pop heavyweight added one more prize of Top Duo/Group by nudging past such Grammy-winning groups as Maroon 5, and Imagine Dragons.

With the victories, BTS reached another milestone as it became the first Korean act to gain multiple honors at the annual musical event.

“I still can’t believe we’re here on this stage with so many great artists,” BTS’s leader RM said. “We’re still the same boys from six years ago, we still have the same dreams … we still have the same thoughts. Let us keep dreaming.”

The septet debuted in 2013 and has gained great popularity across the world. In particular, the band came up with its fourth studio album “Persona: Map of the Soul” last month.

The seven-track mini album has been a big hit – it topped charts and the video of its main track “Boy With Luv” shattered several YouTube records.

Just ahead of BBMA, BTS members talked about their friendship with American singer-songwriter Halsey, who was featured at the music video of “Boy With Luv.”

BTS met Halsey two years ago at the BBMA backstage - she was a fan of BTS music videos, and BTS knew her from ‘Closer,’ according to RM.

Back then, they talked about collaboration. “It happened. Here we are,” RM said.

“Closer” is a song by American DJ duo The Chainsmokers. Halsey also collaborated with the duo for the song.
