It is a precedent in the EU: The US stock market billionaire George Soros-founded Central European University (CEU) changes, after a massive campaign by the Orbán government from Budapest to Vienna. The CEU-management announced at the beginning of December.

A University in an EU country, the need to move from political reasons: The Federal government interprets that as “attack on the freedom of Science” in Europe. “We are experiencing in these days a further low point, with regard to the location of the common values in Hungary,” said Minister of state for Europe Michael Roth (SPD) on the edge of EU consultations in Brussels. It was “a scandal” that such a highly prestigious University, the CEU had to leave the Hungarian capital of Budapest.

In the case of the EU in Brussels, the rule of law in Hungary was Meeting one of the agenda points. The European Parliament had initiated against the country, most recently, a proceeding because of an alleged threat to democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights. It is not progressing so far, however, because it is seen by some EU States is critical.
