AI system helps amateur poets create poems

CJ OliveNetworks announced on Nov. 15 that the company would come up with an anthology of poems, which were created through artificial intelligence system.

The new-fangled system, which is dubbed “Oi Writer,” came to town through machine learning of more than 30,000 poems from various genres, according to the system integrator.

CJ OliveNetworks noted that anybody would be able to create poems because the AI system was designed to generate a draft of a poem at once with a single keyword.

The Seoul-based company worked with nine poets throughout this year to launch the AI poem generator.

They used the system to make 45 poems for the anthology, which also includes ones by amateur poets _ researchers of CJ OliveNetworks.

The company is scheduled to release video clips on YouTube later this year where an AI-created virtual character will read the poems to viewers.

“The new system is geared toward demonstrating that AI offers useful functions for artists and other creators,” a CJ OliveNetworks official said.

Experts expect that more and more artists will brace for AI technologies down the road.

“As you have seen, there have been AI-generated novels, paintings, and music songs,” Prof. Seo Yong-gu at Sookmyung Women’s University said.

“A mounting number of artists will also embrace AI systems for their work, and poets are no exception.”
