System integrator offers solution to make virtual human

South Korean system integrator CJ OliveNetworks announced on Oct. 11 that the company had offered its artificial intelligence technology to create a virtual character for a local dance play.

Specifically, the Seoul-based outfit provided its Voice Cloning and Lip Generation solutions for the AI character, which will play at “Queen of the Night” this week.

The play, which is produced by Lee Kyung-ok, will be performed at Sogang University through Oct. 13, along with the media art of artist Mari Kim.

With voice cloning technology, people can clone the voice of their favorite actors, anytime and from anywhere to come up with an authentic-sounding voice, according to CJ OliveNetworks.

The lip generation technology refers to a lip sync solution, which matches the lip movements in line with the audio and video content.

The two technologies have been dubbed major features to make a life-like virtual character. Hence, many AI corporations have put forth efforts to develop them.

“Thus far, AI technologies have been used for video clips like soap operas or entertainment content. But they start to tap into the real-time stages,” a CJ OliveNetworks official said.

“Based on cooperation with other artistic players, we plan to work on new technologies to help them carry out diverse performances on the stage.”

CJ OliveNetoworks is headed by CEO Cha In-hyok.
