A Netflix drama wins the hearts and minds of viewers
Kim In-soon, a 40-something salaried man in Seoul, heard his coworkers and customers raise the same topic of a drama on global streaming giant Netflix over the past week.Its title was “Extraordinary Attorney Woo,” which is about a 27-year-old woman lawyer on the autism spectrum.Thanks to her high intelligence quotient of 164 and impressive memory, she graduated at the top of her class from South Korea’s most prestigious law school.After entering one of the top law firms, the rookie lawyer continues to solve case after case with creative thought processes.The legal drama premiered on a local channel late last month and airs twice a week. At first, its viewership was less than 1 percent, according to Nielson Korea.However, the figure amounted to 9.14 percent on July 13 and is expected to surpass 10 percent on July 14.On Netflix, it topped the list in four countries of South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Indonesia, as of July 13. In the global charts, its ranking was the 11th position, according to Flixpatrol that tracks streaming data.“Because so many people talked about the drama, I visited Netflix to see it. As soon as I watched the first episode, I had no choice but to view all the five episodes available,” Kim said. “I am now waiting impatiently for the next episode.”Asked why she was so attracted by the content, Kim said that it is really extraordinary.“It has a heart-warming look at autistic people. Although they have difficulties in social skills and communication, the drama doesn’t take issue with them,” Kim said.“Instead, it lets me understand them. Unlike so many content on Netflix, it makes me smile without any violent or provocative scenes. I do love that.”AStory, a production company for the 16-part drama, even plans to make the Netflix show into a webtoon, which will be available in Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese.Extraordinary Attorney Woo stars actress Park Eun-bin in the title role.
