Korean webtoon platform starts global event

A popular Korean webtoon portal launched an event of giving global fans the chance to vote on their favorite webtoons in three languages over the next 10 days.

Lezhin Entertainment said Dec. 6 that the Seoul-based outfit started the “2019 Best Webtoons Award,” which will continue through Dec. 15 in Korea, Japan, and the United States.

The company chose nominees of the awards based on episode purchases, views, and subscriber counts during the first 10 months of this year.

“Among 8,161 Korean titles, 288 English ones, and 726 Japanese ones available on Lezhin Comics, the list was narrowed to 30 all-age and 30 adult titles for each language,” a Lezhin official said.

“Until Dec. 15, our users will be able to vote for their favorite candidates. They are allowed to vote for one adult and one all-age webtoon everyday.”

Lezhin plans to announce the result one by one from Dec. 20 to Dec. 29.

Janis Jang, who takes charge of Lezhin’s strategy and planning, expressed big hopes on the unprecedented event.

“The Best Webtoon Awards is the first event of its kind for us, and we thought it’d be a wonderful way to shine a spotlight on titles, which audiences have shown so much love this year,” Jang said.

“In 2020, we’ll do our best to continue to offer a wide variety of fun and enjoyable content to our fans.”

Lezhin Comics is a webtoon portal, which Lezhin Entertainment opened in 2013. Its content is available through www.lezhin.com.
