Hyundai Motor’s G80 EV comes to town
Genesis has launched this week its first electrified model, the G80 EV, in line with Hyundai Motor’s long-term strategy of tapping into the electric vehicle market in a full-fledged manner.
Genesis is the luxury model of Hyundai Motor. It grabbed attention early this year when Tiger Woods had a car accident that put his career in jeopardy _ the U.S. golfer was driving a Genesis automobile.
Genesis said that the electrified G80 presents a new standard for luxury electric sedans with its high levels of performance and technology.
The all-wheel-drive sedan’s powertrain has a peak output of 365 horsepower. Its dual-motor system enables the vehicle to sprint from a standstill to 100 kilometers in less than 5 seconds, according to Genesis.
On a single charge, the model can travel more than 400 kilometers and it takes slightly more than 20 minutes to charge it from 10 percent to 80 percent via a fast-charging device.
Its buyers also opt to install such functionalities as vehicle-to-load (V2L) and a solar roof.
The former allows the users to charge any electric devices, including electric bicycles, camping equipment, and home appliances, through the Genesis G80 EV.
The latter enables motorists to drive the electric car in a more efficient way, Genesis said.
Several latest functionalities including lane following assist, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, forward collision-avoidance assist, and safe exit assist.
“Its price starts at 82.81 million won ($72,000) without government subsidies and will rise depending on several optional devices and functionalities,” a Genesis official said.
“We have yet to decide when the model will hit the overseas market and how much it would be outside of the country.”
However, observers pointed out that the G80 EV should prove itself in the market.
“Hyundai and its sister firm Kia has a dedicated electric car platform, which was applied to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6,” Prof. Kim Pil-soo from Daelim University said.
“The G80 EV did not use the platform. Hence, it remains to be seen how well the car would perform.”
