Car manufacturers such as Korea's Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, in their endeavor to minimize car emissions, have come up with cars that don’t require gasoline.

They use electricity, a combination of diesel and electricity, and hydrogen as fuel. Hybrid vehicles either use DC or AC engines. The former runs on a maximum of 190 volts while the latter uses up to 240 volts.

Electric engines

Electric vehicles have electric engines in the place of combustion engines. They are powered by a rechargeable battery. But just how do electric engines work? Hybrids can be used in vehicles that require charging or the ones that can utilize gasoline and electricity.

How do electric engines work

Electric vehicles that have batteries require regular charging for them to work. The good thing about charging your car is that you can do it at home by using a powerful outlet like the one for an electric dryer.

Electrics use the energy stored which is in chemical form and transforms it into electric energy which is crucial for the car to function.

How do hybrid car engines work

Hybrid vehicles could either be parallel or series. In parallel, the hybrid cars engines together with the motor provide the wheels with power. The motor provides the wheels with power while the hybrid engines move the motor in order to charge the battery.

Full hybrids are equipped with batteries and motors that are capable of utilizing enough electricity to power the car engine to drive without any assistance.

In mild hybrids, the motor and engine work together to power the car. The hybrid engines and motors can run the plugin vehicles independently. Plugins are manufactured with petrol engines and electric batteries.

Hydrogen powered engines

Hydrogen vehicles are electric cars that are charged by a hydrogen cell that combines oxygen and hydrogen. These gases are transformed into electric energy by passing through a proton chamber.

The advantage of driving such a car that there will be absolutely no pollution because it releases water as the byproduct.

Vehicles with hydrogen combustion engines use high-pressure tanks to store the fuel. This way, they can store almost as twice the energy stored by lithium-ion batteries. Also, batteries might be needed in large numbers to power and this could be bulky but the idea of using light tanks to store hydrogen is much more convenient.

Hydrogen internal combustion engines work by transforming hydrogen gas into usable energy. This gas is transferred into the vehicle by using pressure.

How do hydrogen combustion engines work?

Hydrogen powered cars use cells to convert hydrogen into electric energy.  Below is an outline of how electric energy is produced:

1. Hydrogen from the storage tanks flows to the positively charged end of a cell.

2. Oxygen siphoned from the atmosphere passes down another pipe to the negatively charged terminal.

3. The material used on the positive end is platinum which makes it a catalyst. This means that hydrogen breaks downs faster to produce ions and protons.

4. The protons move to the negative end.

5. Electrons pass via the outer end thereby powering the wheels of the vehicle.

6. When all the elements meet at the negative end they turn to water which is released as steam.

Conclusion

The use of electric, hybrid, and hydrogen engines reduces the amount of destruction the environment suffers from car exhaust. Electric engines are reliable because they can be charged at home as long as one possesses the right power outlet. Although not popular, hydrogen combustion engines are slowly catching up.
