Multi-purpose unmanned ground vehicle to run on 5G tech

Hanwha Defense has teamed up with KT to take advantage of the fifth-generation (5G) technology in developing such advanced arms systems as multi-purpose unmanned ground vehicles.

To come up with remotely-controlled or autonomous weapons, Hanwha said on Oct. 30 that the two Seoul-based outfits signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) early this week.

In particular, the two will cooperate to establish 5G-based mobile-access edge cloud (MED), which is aimed at reducing latency and costs by hosting applications and content closer.

In addition, Hanwha Defense and KT agreed to jointly work on the wireless telecommunication technology for defense robots and new services.

The former is Korea’s top defense company, while the latter is the country’s primary telecommunication service provider.

“Over the past few years, Hanwha Defense has successfully tested multi-purpose unmanned ground vehicles. Last year, we also proved our competitiveness in various autonomous combat techs,” a Hanwha official said.

“Telecom solutions including the 5G network are significant in running the systems. For example, we can more than double our operation range while enabling remoted-controlling or autonomous functions.”

Hanwha Defense research center chief Kim Tae-hyung expected that the alliance with KT will sharpen its competitiveness.

“We will continue to upgrade our defense robot platforms by perfecting our remoted-controlling or autonomous capabilities,” Kim said.
