Korean outfit launches campaign to help Vietnam
A South Korean conglomerate tries to help clean Vietnam’s Mekong River through launching a campaign of removing waste from the river based on advanced technology.Hanwha Group said June 6 that it has kicked off the “Clean Up Mekong” campaign in Vinh Long Province along with the country’s authority, just a day after World Environment Day.The Seoul-based group said that the campaign is about combating the pollutants floating in the Mekong River. Toward that end, Hanwha donated solar-powered boats that will be used to clean the river.The Mekong is a trans-boundary river that runs through such countries as China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia. Finally, it finishes in Vietnam before discharging into the sea.Along the way, the river supports more than 70 million people, who depend on it as their main source of water. But waste and dirty sewage discharge caused serious pollution.“The pollutants ultimately float into the ocean and threaten marine life,” a Hanwha official said.“As Vietnam is the last country the river runs through, the Clean Up Mekong campaign aims to remove waste before it enters the ocean, at the riverside city of Vinh Long.”At the center of the campaign is solar-powered boats donated by Hanwha as they will be used to scoop up waste in the Mekong River without emitting any greenhouse gases or other pollutants.Nguyen Thi Thien Phuong, a senior official of the Vietnamese government hoped for the initiative’s success.“I’m pleased that South Korea and Vietnam can work together to solve climate change and environmental issues. I’m hoping that this campaign will be successful and spread throughout the whole of Vietnam,” she said.Tran Hoang Tu, Vice President of Vinh Long Permanent Provincial People’s Committee, also pinned hype on the project.“I am very proud to be working with Hanwha on an innovative idea to solve the Mekong’s waste problem with these solar-powered boats here in Vinh Long,” he said. “Vinh Long will continue to use these donated solar-powered boats to keep the Mekong River clean.”이 기사를 공유합니다
