Hanwha’s up-to-date weapons systems drew keen attention during an Indian defense trade show that ended the last weekend, according to industry officials.

Hanwha’s defense business units participated in the DefExpo 2020, a defense and aerospace exhibition held in Lucknow, India, from Feb. 5 to 9, in bids to bolster its footprint in the growing Asian defense powerhouse.

Over 1,000 companies from nearly 70 countries took part in the biennial defense show to showcase their defense products. Among them, Hanwha was one of the main foreign exhibitors with a large-scale booth spanning 250 square meters to accommodate up-to-date land and electronic defense systems.

Manufactured by Hanwha Defense, Hybrid BIHO short-range air defense system became the selfie spot for visitors. The advanced tracked armored vehicle was declared as the only qualified bidder in 2018 for the Indian Army’s air defense acquisition program after successful tests and evaluations.

Hybrid BIHO is a sophisticated air defense system that can fire both 30mm twin machine guns and guided weapons capable of providing day/night all-weather close-in air defense against low-altitude aerial threats such as aircraft, helicopters and drones.

It features advanced radar and fire-control systems. Battle engagement capability of Hybrid BIHO is very effective by utilizing both guns. Missile system also has high accuracy by simultaneous operation of radar and electro-optical tracking and searching (EOTS) system.

“India and other Asian customers showed keen interest in Hanwha’s up-to-date land and electronic defense products,” said Lee Sung-soo, CEO & President of Hanwha Defense and Hanwha Defense International.

“We will try to achieve new orders in this region by strengthening marketing efforts to offer products optimized to meeting the needs of customers.”

Among other Hanwha Defense’s land products on display are the K9 Thunder 155mm/52cal self-propelled howitzer; HWG-40, a Close-in Weapon System for air defense; the AS21 Redback future infantry fighting vehicle that has been shortlisted for Australia’s Land 400 Phase 3 tender; and new Tigon armored vehicles in 6x6 / 8x8 versions.

A leading electronic defense systems maker in South Korea, Hanwha Systems is showcasing showcase a variety of equipment, such as a lightweight multi-function surveillance and target acquisition system; an electro-optical tracking system, and a thermal weapon system.

Under the theme of “The Emerging Defense Manufacturing Hub,” the DefExpo 2020 is to serve as a venue for boosting the “Make in India” initiative aimed at spurring the growth of India’s defense sector.

The Government of India has set a target of achieving a turnover of $26 billion by 2025 in defense production by boosting indigenous defense manufacturing and collaboration with global defense companies.
