Hyundai-Kia recall 2 million cars over 4 years
Hyundai Motor issues a recall to fix about 20,000 Veloster vehicles in the United States and Canada as its engine is feared to stall due to faulty software, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).The NHTSA discovered the problem while carrying out investigations into fires in Hyundai vehicles. The recall covers just the 2013 Veloster hatchbacks with 1.6-liter engines.Hyundai dealers will update the software at no charge to owners so that the software at issue would not cause problems.Jason Levine, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, told AP that the fire and engine problems keep spreading to more vehicles. The consumer group has asked for more Hyundai and Kia recalls.“This recall raises the question of whether we are even beyond the tip of the iceberg with these non-crash fires with both of these manufacturers,” Levine said. “How many times are we going to hear from either Hyundai or Kia that these circumstances are unique to a particular model and then have another recall or fire situation announced weeks or months later?”In response, Hyundai claimed that the engine problem is restricted to the Veloster, which was made in Korea’s Ulsan plant from early 2012 to late 2013.Since 2015, Hyundai and Kia have recalled more than 2 million vehicles to deal with problems, which may cause engine failures and fires.Hyundai is Korea’s largest automaker while its sister company Kia is a No. 2 player.
