Two firms target for next-generation service robot market

South Korea’s Hyundai Robotics announced on June 1 that the company had joined hands with global telecom powerhouse Vodafone during a recent trade fair in Germany.

The Seoul-based company noted that it would cooperate with Vodafone to develop 5G- and 6G-powered service robots for medical and hospitality industries.

Based on the agreement, which was reached during Hannover Messe, Hyundai Robotics vies to take advantage of Vodafone’s cutting-edge technologies in artificial intelligence, 5G, and big data.

Hyundai Robotics has a knack for building hardware and autonomous operation software of service robots.

“The new robots will be designed to collect data via cameras and sensors to quickly process them in such workplaces as hotels, hospitals, and exhibition halls.

The Seoul-based company commented that it and Vodafone were scheduled to embark on pilot trials at a hospital in Germany before offering 5G-enabled service robots to other areas in Europe.

Already, customers are knocking on the doors of the two companies as the Netherlands’ RobotART and Spain’s Mozo Robotics inked letters of intent to buy 600 and 300 service robots from Hyundai, apiece.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, the global behemoth in the shipbuilding business, established Hyundai Robotics in the mid-1980s.

The robotics firm was spun off from Hyundai Heavy Industries two years ago.
