Ginseng company strives to sharpen technological edge

Korea Ginseng Corporation (KGC) has launched its research center in the United States in a move to come up with customized ginseng products for U.S. customers.

The new facility, which is located near Los Angeles, is the South Korean ginseng company’s second overseas research lab outside of the country.

The U.S. outfit will be tasked with developing new brands with local relevance, monitoring production procedures, and improving quality control there, according to KGC.

In addition, the research center will try to find out ingredients and functionalities loved by U.S. end customers.

Based on the U.S. market, KGC expects to tap into other North and South American countries.

KGC established its U.S. unit in 2003 in California for fast growth. Since 2018, the U.S. affiliate’s sales have expanded up to 15 percent a year on average.

Despite the virus pandemic, KGC has doubled its efforts to wade into global markets. It is the largest ginseng maker in the world, with a market share bigger than 40 percent.

KGC CEO Her Chul-ho took part in the opening ceremony of the R&D center.

“The U.S. research center will not only strengthen our product portfolio tailor-made for the taste of the U.S. clients but also help beef up our infrastructure in the U.S.,” Her said.
