Practical cooperation system agreed upon between Seoul and London

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced on April 11 that it had teamed up with the United Kingdom to establish a clean hydrogen ecosystem and promote carbon neutrality.

Toward that end, the Korean organization signed a memorandum of understanding with the British Embassy in Seoul at a ceremony held in the former’s head office in Gyeongju.

Included in the pacts were a project development and joint R&D between the two countries to establish a clean hydrogen ecosystem; the operation of a carbon-neutral working group to discuss the energy policy and project development; and the establishment of a network between hydrogen-related companies in both countries by hosting seminars with hydrogen experts and corporate participation.

Based on the agreement, KHNP noted that it would build a network of hydrogen-related companies in the two countries and foster an ecosystem for the hydrogen industry by developing necessary technologies and sharing business information.

“KHNP plans to leverage its expertise regarding the safe nuclear operation to become a global leader in the construction and operation of hydrogen production plants,” KHNP CEO Whang Joo-ho said.

“We will take the initiative in establishing a hydrogen ecosystem, including the development of clean hydrogen infrastructure, by collaborating with the British government and other carbon-neutral related companies.”

Grant Shapps, the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero at the British Embassy, also welcomed the bilateral agreement.

“Korea and the UK aim to achieve Net Zero by 2050, and renewable energy such as green hydrogen will play a critical role,” he said.

“I am pleased that KHNP and the British Embassy Seoul have established a Net Zero partnership, and I look forward to seeing the two countries walk together towards a sustainable future.”
