‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’ attracts global fans

South Korean drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” ranked No. 3 in the global Netflix charts on July 28, according to Flixpatrol that tracks streaming data.

Since its first premiere on June 29, the series joined the global top 10 charts. But it marks the first time to join the ranks of the top three list.

It was the most popular show in a total of 20 countries, including Bahrain, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Maldives, Mexico, Oman, the Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, UAE, and Vietnam.

It also assumed the No. 9 position in the United States, joining the top 10 list for the first time in the country.

“Extraordinary Attorney Woo” is about a 27-year-old woman lawyer on the autism spectrum.

Thanks to her high intelligence and impressive memory, she graduated from South Korea’s most prestigious law school.

After getting aboard one of the top law firms, the rookie lawyer solves case after case with creative thought processes and out-of-the-box ideas.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo stars actress Park Eun-bin in the title role. Other actors include Kang Tae-oh, Jeon Bae-soo, Baek Ji-won, and Joo Hyun-young.

The legal drama is not a Netflix original. It airs on a local channel twice a week. At first, its viewership was less than 1 percent, but it has approached 20 percent this week, according to Nielson Korea.

Prof. Kim Byung-gun of Korea Nazarene University, who offered advice for the series, said that its success would help people better understand the disabled.

“Thus far, various research and programs have continued to reduce discrimination against the disabled. But I don’t know whether such efforts worked,” Kim said.

“But movies and dramas, which have big social impacts, would help improve awareness about disability.”
