GUNG_E soars to highest spot on release

As soon as its release on Jan. 20, South Korean scientific-fiction movie “JUNG_E” topped the podium in the global Netflix charts, according to FlixPatrol on Jan. 23.

FlixPatrol, which tracks streaming data across the globe, noted that the Korean show reached the highest echelon on Jan. 20 and remained atop the list.

In particular, the film topped the podium in around 50 countries, including France, South Korea, Taiwan, the United States, and Vietnam.

In particular, JUNG_E soared to the No. 1 slot for the past three consecutive days.

The Netflix original film, directed by Yeon Sang-ho, depicts an uninhabitable early in the 22nd century. In the dystopian future, the outcome of a civil war depends on cloning the brain of an elite soldier to create a robot mercenary.

“Although the movie is a scientific-fiction film, I think it is about a universal theme, which can be easily accepted by the audience,” Yeon said during a press conference before JUNG_E’s release.

“I tried to blend scientific fiction with the classic Korean melodrama, which would make people cry,” he said.

This is not the first time for Director Yeon to top the Netflix charts as his six-part thriller "Hellbound" climbed to No. 1 just a day after its debut in late 2021.

JUNG_E stars mostly South Korean actors and actresses, including Kim Hyun-joo, Ryu Kyung-soo, and the late Kang Soo-yeon, an international star who passed away last May.
