Samsung Chairman Lee tops the podium

What would it be like to live in the country’s most expensive residence? You cannot ask the feeling because its owner is unable to answer your question _ he cannot even stay there because he is hospitalized.

According to Seoul Metropolitan Government on March 31, the house of Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee in southern Seoul is valued at $35 million, up 52.4 percent from a year ago.

His other house came in second. Also, located in southern Seoul, the price of the posh mansion was estimated at $30 million, up 43.8 percent from 2018.

Chairman Lee’s youngest sister of Shinsegae Group Chairwoman Lee Myung-hee holds the third-most expensive house in southern Seoul with a price tag of $24.5 million, up 41.6 percent.

Shinsegae Group is a multi-profile business conglomerate whose interests range from fashion and retail to food. The mid-tier chaebol operates Korea’s largest discount chain E-Mart.

Of note is the house of hallyu star Bae Yong-joon whose price was estimated at $4 million, up 25.7 percent. His home is located in northern Seoul.

Bae is an actor and businessman, who has starred in various TV dramas and films, including Winter Sonata that became a major part of the Korean Wave, otherwise called hallyu.

Midway through 2014, Samsung Chairman Lee collapsed from a heart attack and has yet to regain consciousness. The lack of independent confirmation of Lee’s condition resulted in speculation. A news outlet even reported that he had passed away, but he appears to be in a vegetative state.

Samsung is the country’s biggest conglomerate by any measure. Included in its flagship subsidiaries are Samsung Electronics and Samsung Life Insurance.

The former is the world’s largest maker of memory chips, smartphones, and flat-panel displays. The latter is a top-tier financial company in Asia’s No. 4 economy.

Chairman Lee is also the country’s wealthiest man followed by his son of Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong.
