KT Chairman and CEO Hwang Chang-Gyu delivers a speech on South Korea’s first commercial 5G network at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) 2019, held in The Hague, Netherlands from June 3 to 5.

Hwang urges 5G innovation with global leaders

KT, the company that launched the world’s first nationwide 5G commercial network, is asking world leaders to pioneer the future of next-generation wireless connectivity together.

In a speech during the Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2019 in The Hague last week, KT Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu made the point to a host of global leaders.

Included in the audience list are U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on top of policymakers and opinion leaders from across the globe.

In the speech, Hwang envisioned a future where every corner of economy and society benefits from a new mobile world on the power of 5G.

“5G can create a great synergy if the Netherlands’ world-class industrial technologies, such as smart farms and smart cities, are combined with Korea’s advanced mobile network technologies,” he said.

“Korea is the perfect test-bed for 5G development, and I invite you all to visit Korea and KT anytime to experience how 5G is really changing our world and lives.”

Hwang, who has a moniker of “Mr. 5G,” was invited to speak at the meeting co-hosted by the U.S. Department of State and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Korea kicked off the 5G services early this April headed by KT, the country’s leading fixed-line operator and No. 2 wireless telephony service provider.

In particular, the Seoul-based company took the world by surprise via its first 5G trial services at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games.

Earlier, Chairman Hwang spearheaded the initiative by iterating the company’s commitment to 5G at the Mobile World Congress twice in 2015 and 2017.

Compared to previous mobile networks, 5G enables a set of unprecedented services including augmented reality and virtual reality in addition to autonomous driving.
