Autonomous cars will adopt next-generation products

LG Display has shown off transparent OLED products during the K-Display 2022, which took place between Aug. 10 and Aug. 12 in southern Seoul.

The Seoul-based mounted 16 transparent OLED panels into a glass wall where the company showcased product information just like holograms without a separate TV or monitor.

Brief for organic light-emitting diodes, OLED has been widely used for digital displays on such devices as television, computers, and portable gadgets.

It offers better picture quality and consumes less power compared to conventional liquid crystal display (LCD) technology.

Observers pointed out that the new OLED technology will be adopted by autonomous vehicles, which are expected to replace traditional human motorist-driven cars.

“Transparent OLED products can be used for windows of driverless cars. Passengers will be able to watch video clips or advertisements on them,” Prof. Kim Pil-soo at Daelim University said.

He added that transparent OLEDs would be adopted by existing vehicles.

“The head-up display for conventional vehicles can also be replaced by transparent OLED to offer more information to drivers,” he said.

LG Display also demonstrated its OLED.EX screen, which is sized 97-inch, the largest in the world during the 22nd edition of the annual trade show.

Its competitor Samsung Display also showed off its latest technologies like next-generation mobile OLED, which was applied to its latest foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold4.

Samsung Electronics unveiled the model this week during the smartphone maker’s unpacked event. The company plans to market the new gadget in South Korea later this month.

The tech giant plans to sell the much-awaited gizmos in other markets across the world later.
