Darin Graham, new chief of LG AI lab in Toronto

Korean tech giant hires Darin Graham

LG Electronics strives to beef up its competitiveness in artificial intelligence (AI) through recruiting a globally-renowned expert in the highly-prominent segment.

The Seoul-based company said May 29 that it tapped Darin Graham as the chief of its AI research center located in Toronto, Canada.

Graham, a founding member of the Vector Institute of AI in Canada, is a top-tier researcher in artificial neural networks.

LG Electronics set up the Toronto AI lab midway through last year in order to carry out various AI-related projects together with the University of Toronto, the hotbed of AI study.

The university is famous for Geoffrey Hinton, who revolutionized AI research through advanced deep learning technology. He is called the godfather of deep learning.

The winner of the 2018 Turing Prize is regarded as one of the four most authoritative AI experts along with Yann LeCun, Andrew Ng, and Ray Kurzweil.

LG said that Graham’s extensive connections with Canada’s academic and business communities will help improve research capabilities of its Toronto lab.

The info-tech giant strives to take advantage of AI technologies to raise the competitive edge of its products in such areas as robotics, home appliances, and energy control business.

For example, LG announced this month that it has developed its own AI chip to better imitate the neural network of the human brain, which is necessary to improve the processing of deep learning algorithms.

Back then, the company said that the AI chip’s powerful image processing function corrects distortion caused by wide-angle lenses and generates brighter and clear images in dark environments.

It expected that the new chip will be used for such products as robot vacuum cleaners, washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
