World No. 1 tennis player talks about her BTS fandom

World No. 1 tennis player Naomi Osaka said that she is also a fan of K-pop superstar BTS, which is rocking the globe through its latest studio album “Map of the Soul: Persona.”

She made the remarks during an interview ahead of the 2019 Mutua Madrid Open.

“I got into BIGBANG and 2NE1, especially CL,” Osaka said. “I don’t know the year, sort of like when ‘Crush’ and stuff came out.”

“And then I just saw BTS doing a lot of related stuff, so I was like who are these kids? Then I slowly started getting into them during the ‘I Need U’ era.”

BIGBANG and 2NE1 are Korean idol groups. CL was a member of 2NE1, which released its second and final album “Crush” in early 2014.

BIGBANG is a boy band that includes Seurngri, who is at the center of the recent drug-and-sex scandal that has caught global K-pop fans by surprise.

“I Need U” refers to a song of BTS included in the 2015 album “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1.”

This is not the first time that the 21-year-old tennis star showed her love for BTS. Last month, she linked a BTS song at her social networking site.

Osaka, born to a Haitian father and a Japanese mother, is the defending champion in women’s singles at the Australian Open and the US Open. She is the first Asian player to advance into the top ranking in tennis singles.

Osaka was born in Japan and represents the Asian country. But she grew up in the United States.
