Cannes-winning movie achieves major milestone

Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s film “Parasite,” has attracted more than 10 million moviegoers in almost three months after its release on May 30 here.

The movie, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year, added 11,669 viewers on July 21 to chalk up a cumulative 10,000,249 attendances.

The film, which is a black comedy, suspense thriller, and bloodbath all mixed into one, drew more than 6.5 million viewers in just 10 days by remaining atop the Korean box office.

Back then, Bong’s fourth collaboration with actor Song Kang-ho was expected to easily surpass 10 million viewers, but the daily figure plunged thereafter.

In June, many observers were suspicious of whether the winner of the prestigious annual French festival will be able to reach the 10 million mark.

However, the genre-bending masterpiece managed to draw more than 10 million attendance, to become Bong’s second movie to attain the milestone after “the Host.”

“The Host,” which also starred Song, is a 2006 monster film that put Bong at the limelight. By the end of its run, more than 13 million tickets were sold in Korea.

“Parasite” also became the fourth movie that attracts upside of 10 million viewers this year following “Extreme Job,” “Avengers: Endgame,” and sleeper hit “Aladdin.”

“Parasite” marks Bong’s return to fully Korean film in a decade.

The story is about two families – one being extremely wealthy and the other very poor – whose lives become intertwined in a strange fashion.

The poor family tries to become “parasites” of the rich one by providing “luxury” services. At first, the interactions seem to work, but they eventually fall apart in a tragic way.

The dark comedy, which got praise from critics across the world, has clinched sales deals with around 200 countries to reach its break-even point even before its official launch in late April.
