New agreement geared toward reducing mobile waste

South Korea’s Samsung Electronics announced on March 2 that it had expanded its long-term partnership with Orange by agreeing on a series of new initiatives.

The Seoul-based outfit said that the extended collaboration would help enhance Samsung Galaxy user experiences across Europe.

In particular, the two corporations plan to collaborate to reduce waste and extend the lifecycle of mobile devices as well as implement device and technology testing to prepare for the arrival of 5G standalone, according to Samsung.

“Samsung is dedicated to innovative, strategic partnerships that enable us to scale positive impact around the world,” Samsung Executive Vice President Bryan Choi said.

“We are pleased to strengthen our relationship with Orange and see Galaxy devices being recycled and reused in different ways and to help provide a more seamless experience for the Galaxy community.”

As part of the agreement, the two outfits would prepare for the deployment of advanced 5G standalone (SA) services.

“The collaboration will see the implementation of end-to-end testing of Samsung devices and technology such as network slicing and voice over Orange’s 5G SA test networks,” a Samsung official said.

“The process will explore new use-cases made possible through 5G SA network capabilities to support both advanced industrial and entertainment-related services.”

Samsung Electronics is the world's largest manufacturer of mobile phones, memory chips, and flat-panel displays. Currently, Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong is leading the outfit.

Orange is one of the world's largest telecom operators, with sales topping 42 billion euros last year. It employs up to 140,000 workers across the globe as of the end of last year. It is headed by CEO Stephane Richard.
