Samsung official talks about possibly postponing US debut of foldable handset

Samsung Electronics is not excluding the possibility of delaying the launch of its bendable handset, the Galaxy Fold, set to go on sale from April 26 in the United States, because of a controversy over screen problems.

A number of reviewers of the innovative device have reported broken screens, claiming that it is not ready for public release.

Against this backdrop, Samsung Electronics postponed Galaxy Fold launch events in Hong Kong and Shanghai scheduled for this week, prompting expectations the firm could hit the pause button on selling the Galaxy Fold in the U.S. this week.

“We have retrieved review handsets, which had screen problems, for a thorough investigation. We will make a decision after an in-depth investigation is completed,” a Samsung official said.

Asked whether Samsung would go ahead with the U.S. launch on April 26, the official said, “We will not stick to the date. We are open to the possibility that the commercial debut of the Galaxy Fold will be delayed.”

When reviewers reported the problems, Samsung responded that they had mistakenly removed the protective layer and this caused the malfunctions, adding that doing so could cause damage to the new-type gadget.

Then, it promised that the information will be clearly delivered to customers.

But some reviewers countered that the issues are bigger than the protective film as the devices malfunctioned in different ways, recommending people not to buy the expensive Galaxy Fold, whose price tag is $1,980, just after its release.

Three years ago, Samsung recalled the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 amid continued reports of the model exploding while charging, which greatly chipped away at the Seoul-based company’s bottom line.
