Tech giant bets all on artificial intelligence

Samsung Electronics took the wrap off a rolling robot, which is a litter bigger than a tennis ball and named Ballie, during the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas this week.

Samsung said that the robotic ball is based on artificial intelligence (AI), which the Seoul-based company has vehemently developed to preempt the competition with global powerhouses like Google and Amazon.

Samsung’s chief research scientist Sebastian Seung said that Ballie’s AI capabilities enable it to be a fitness assistant and a mobile interface that seeks solutions for people’s changing needs.

“We believe AI is the future of personalized care,” said Seung, who is a world-famous expert in neuroscience.

“We see on-device AI as central to truly personalized experiences. On-device AI puts you in control of your information and protects your privacy, while still delivering the power of personalization.”

To the regret of participants in the annual tech show, however, the world’s largest maker of memory chips did not specify when it will market the product and how much it will cost.

While delivering a keynote speech at the fair, Samsung CEO Kim Hyun-suk said that the firm will lead the “age of experience.”

“In the Age of Experience, we need to re-think the space we have to accommodate our diverse and evolving lifestyles,” he said.

“What makes Samsung’s approach unique is the fact that we have a very clear philosophy built around human-centered innovation. We build and create to solve problems and enhance people’s lives.”
