Anniversary of Korea-Singapore ties marked
The relations between Korea & Singapore have become more consolidated since the virus pandemic, according to Singapore Amb. Eric Teo during a recent event in Seoul.
Amb. Teo made the comments during a diplomatic reception to mark the 58th Singapore Independence Day as well as the 48th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea & Singapore at a downtown hotel in Seoul late last week.
Amb. Teo, who has been working for the last four years in Korea as the top Singaporean envoy here, noted that Singapore was operating its direct flights with Korea’s three cities of Incheon, Busan, and Jeju.
The diplomat added that he hoped for Singapore to add its direct flights with one or two more cities in Korea within several years.
The two countries’ bond and mutual trust are the core of every bilateral relation, according to him, who also prepares for the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations in 2025.
Regarding the 60th anniversary of the Singapore Independence Day in 2025, the Singaporean ambassador said that his men are cooperating with diverse partners in Singapore and Korea to cement the foundation of this important milestone in two years.
Included in the two nations’ joint agendas are digital economy, climate change, green economy, artificial intelligence, startup, food security, supply chain, fintech, public health, and cyber security, according to Teo.
As part of such emerging areas partnership, Korea and Singapore hosted an AI collaboration event in Korea last December to strengthen digital field cooperation.
Since 2014, Singapore has worked on the digital transition at the national level, proclaiming to realize “a smart country.”
In conjunction with its vision, a brisk digital partnership with Korea will be an exemplary case of overcoming common challenges of human beings, said Science and ICT Minister Lee Jong-ho.
He visited the event as a guest to speak congratulatory remarks on behalf of the Korean government.
Minister Lee hoped that bilateral relations would further improve in years to come so as to create synergy in leading the “digital economy era.”

Korea and Singapore established bilateral diplomatic relations on Aug. 8, 1975.
In 2006, Singapore became the first FTA partner of Korea among Asian countries, and Singapore has been the major infrastructure investment target country of Korea.
In 2021, Singapore became the first travel bubble partner country of Korea, which also initiated the climate change dialogue with Singapore for the first time among ASEAN countries.
