Korean chipmaker to supply HBM3 chips to NVIDIA

South Korea’s SK hynix announced on June 9 that it had begun churning out high-performance memory products, called HBM3 DRAM, for the first time in the world.

Brief for high-bandwidth memory, HBM3 refers to the fourth-generation product. SK hynix developed HBM3 last October, and it took half a year to launch its mass production.

Beginning the third quarter of this year, SK hynix said that NVIDIA would use HBM3 chips to produce NVIDIA H100.

SK hynix said that NVIDIA H100 is the world’s largest and most powerful accelerator, which can transmit a total of 163 full high-definition motives in a second.

“We aim to become a solution provider that deeply understands and addresses our customers’ needs through continuous open collaboration,” said SK hynix President Kevin Noh.

Experts said that the mass production of HBM3 is a breakthrough for SK hynix, the world’s second-largest memory chip manufacturer, following business bellwether Samsung Electronics.

“As far as the high-bandwidth chips are concerned, SK hynix appears to take the lead. But Samsung Electronics also has advanced technologies in the field,” Prof. Han Tae-hee at Sungkyunkwan University said.

“For SK hynix, it is a good piece of news for NVIDIA to adopt HBM3 DRAM. But NVIDIA would also use Samsung’s products too. The competition in the high-performance memory chips would get stronger down the road.”

Despite the positive news, SK hynix slumped in the Seoul bourse, and things were similar for Samsung Electronics.

SK hynix saw its share price go down 0.47 percent on June 9 and 1.9 percent on June 10. Samsung Electronics also faced downturns of 0.15 percent and 2.15 percent, respectively.
