New name dethrones two former champions

K-pop girl group ITZY came back last month by releasing the music video for its new song “ICY.” The five-piece band made debut early this year with “DALLA DALLA.”

Then, its members instantly soared to high places in a monthly top idol chart, which is compiled by the Korea Reputation Center (KRC) based on media attention and comments on social networking sites.

In particular, ITZY leader Yeji was named the best idol for August, defeating two previous champions of Mamamoo lead vocalist Hwasa and BlackPink main rapper Jennie.

Hwasa, whose real name is Ahn Hye-jin, stayed atop the list last month while Jennie dominated the chart in June.

Data collected from July 18 and August 18 showed that Yeji scored 2.08 million points, up 149.23 percent from a month ago.

Jennie assumed the second place received 1.98 million points, 6.43 percent from July.

Coming in at third was Hwasa, who gained 1.87 million points, down 10.2 percent month-on-month.

ITZY Yeji’s bandmates Yuna and Lia took the fourth and sixth places, respectively.

“With regard to Yeji, people talked about such issues as ICY and comeback,” KRC CEO Koo Chang-hwan said. “Up to 71.55 percent of comments on her were positive.”

ICY is a summer song that was written by JYP Entertainment founder Park Jin-young.
